National Boxing TournamenKATHMANDU: Ganeshman Singh Foundation on Tuesday honoured legendary boxer and coach Suresh Ale Magar during the opening ceremony of the Bir Ganeshman National Boxing Tournament here at the Basantapur Dabali.

President of the Foundation Prakashman Singh handed over Rs 101,000 along with felicitation letter to Ale Magar. Players from three departmental sides and seven provinces are taking part in the five-day tournament.

On the first day, Sushil Thapa of Tribhuvan Army Club and Diwan Sharma of Nepal Police Club advanced to the quarter-finals. Thapa defeated Suraj Gurung of Province4, while Pawan Shrestha of Province2 beat Dharmendra Rai of Province1 in men’s 49kg section matches.

In women’s section, Sharma outplayed Akriti Gurung of Province4 and Sushila Thapa of Province5 beat Sapana Gurung of Province2.

In other first round actions, Surendra Rai, Sanil Shahi, Bharat Chand, and Kishor Sharma registered victories in their respective weight categories.
