Kathmandu, May 20
To mark the National Food Safety Day that is celebrated on the World Food Safety Day that falls on June 7, the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DoFTQC) has already started organising a food safety campaign.
Organising a press meet today, DoFTQC informed that the campaign has already started outside Kathmandu Valley from April 15 and will be launched within the Valley on Tuesday. The campaign in the Valley will last for three weeks, as per the department.
Previously, the campaign was held only in Kathmandu, but this year it will be organised across the country under the supervision of DoFTQC division offices.
The DoFTQC will be celebrating the 11th National Food Safety Day this year.
“We have been organising this campaign for the last 10 years and this year we have decided to conduct it outside the Valley as well,” said Sanjiv Kumar Karn, director general of DoFTQC.
Under this campaign, DoFTQC will organise several roadshows, awareness campaigns, educational seminars and workshops.
Similarly, interaction programmes with stakeholders will also be conducted under this campaign.
Meanwhile, capacity enhancement training will be provided to the staffers of DoFTQC under this campaign.
Karn added that awareness programmes regarding food safety will be conducted in schools and colleges. As food is very essential for humans and the opportunity to consume healthy food is a fundamental right, DoFTQC has been organising this campaign to make people aware about food safety.
“It is essential for people to know what they are consuming.
So, the major objective of this campaign is to secure people’s right to healthy food,” Karn added.
He further made a commitment to conduct stringent market monitoring. “We will soon be bringing a new Food Act that is more contextual and will have stricter punishment for offenders.”
He also informed that entrepreneurs maintaining food safety and DoFTQC staffers who perform diligently to regulate food safety will be awarded on the occasion of the 11th National Food Safety Day.
