Kathmandu, September 10

Tenzing Namdol Ryan Gurung and Upasti Maharjan shattered national records on the opening day of the ninth NSA Swimming Championship here at the International Sports Complex pool today.

Gurung completed the men’s 100m backstroke race in one minute and 08.25 seconds in heats to break Alexander Shah’s mark of 1:10.93 but he failed to win gold medal in final after he finished second behind Aditya Surya.

Surya completed the distance in 1:07.59 to win gold, while Gurung came second in 1:09.00 and Nasir Hussain was third in 1:14.91. Gurung’s timing of 1:08.25 will be the new national record as Surya, being an Indian citizen, was not eligible for the record.

Maharjan swam the women’s 200m breaststroke heats in 3:01.81 breaking the previous record of 3:07.22 held by Duana Lama. The final of the event will be held tomorrow.

Alexander Shah of Lincoln School won the men’s 200m freestyle gold in 2:06.65, finishing ahead of Nepal Police Club’s Gaurav Lama (2.15.66) and Lincoln’s Nasir Hussain (2.16.63). Shuvam Shrestha men’s 200m backstroke final with the timing of 2:39.12, while Bikash Kumal came second in 2.42.36 and Dipanker Awale was third in 2.42.94.

Likewise, Anushka Pokharel won the women’s 100m backstroke event gold medal in 1.21.03, while Sameera Shova Thapa was second in 1.22.50 and Anushiya Tandukar came third in 1.23.53.

A total of 226 swimmers are taking part in the championship that features 61 events.

The first day competitions were delayed by hours as Nepal Swimming Association struggled to operate the newly-installed electronic scoring system. Only the finals of 18 events were possible due to the delay and the organisers were forced to extend the two-day championship to three days.

The championship is the penultimate selection event for the 13th South Asian Games and national team members including Gaurika Singh, Sayed Hamza Shah, Sofia Shah, Nathan Dorje Sherpan and Duana Lama have not taken part. According to NSA, the final selection will be held in due course.
