Nairo Quintana charged to a breakaway victory on stage 18 of the Tour de France in Valloire, while Julian Alaphilippe lost only five seconds from his overall lead as Egan Bernal overhauled Geraint Thomas to move into second place.

Bernal raced away from Ineos teammate Geraint Thomas as they tried to shake off Alaphilippe on the Col du Galibier, attacking 3km from the summit of the famed climb and opening a lead of 32 seconds over the reduced group of favourites to move up from fifth to second overall, five seconds ahead of Thomas.
