The most-awaited ICC Women T20 World Cup-Qualifier-Asia 2019 series began in Thailand on February 18, 2019!

Nepal made a good start by beating Malaysia by 34 runs at the opening match of the Asia Qualifier! The match began at the Terdthai Cricket Ground with Nepal winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

The Nepali side set a target of 127 runs for Malaysia to beat. Opening batswoman Sita Magar alone scored 42 runs, followed by Nepali skipper Rubina Chhetri playing an unbeaten 33 runs.

Kajol Shrestha and Indu Barma scored 16 and 13 runs, respectively.

However, when it was Malaysia’s turn to bat, the team failed to keep up with Nepal’s pace up. Malaysia crumbled at 92 runs with a loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs.

Background

The ICC Women T20 World Cup-Qualifier-Asia 2019 will be held between February 18-27, 2019. The tournament serves as the gateway to the next ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 in Australia and the 50-over ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2021 in New Zealand.

Seven countries including China, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Thailand and UAE will be competing with each other in the round robin format.

Presently, Asia is one of the strongest out of the five regions with teams such as Thailand (12th), UAE (14th) and Nepal (16th). All of these Asian teams are in the ‘Top 16’ of the newly expanded MRF Tyres Women’s T20 International Rankings.

The Nepali squad comprises of Rubina Chhetry Belbashi (Captain), Apsari Begam, Aarati Bidari, Bindu Rawal, Indu Barma, Kajal Shrestha, Karuna Bhandari, Nairry Thapa, Kabita Kunwar, Mamta Kumari Chaudahry, Roma Thapa Sarita Magar, Sita Rana Magar and Sonu Khadka.
