Seems, the Government of Nepal has finally turned its attention towards strengthening of the domestic sports sector.

In one such recent move, the Prime Minister Oli has directed the country’s sports authorities to identify all the concerning issues in the sports sector and submit a consolidated report to the government within 10 days.

Oli said this in a meeting with the Sports Minister for Youth and Sports Jagat Bahadur Bishwakarma, Nepal Sports Council (NSC) Vice-President Pitambar Timsina, Member Secretary Keshav Kumar Bista and other sports authorities, at his residence on January 12, 2018.

As the reports say, the Prime Minister called for this meeting to take stock of progress, mismanagement and other internal issues in the country’s sports sector.

Stating that he has been watching the issues in the sector, Oli raised concerns about the preparations for the National Games to be held in Nepalgunj.

In this regard, he directed officials to submit their reports on the 8th National Games, internal issues among associations and any other irregularities.

A Sudden Review Meeting!

NSC Vice-President Timsina feels that was a sudden meeting without any prior intimation.

“We could not present the report as the Prime Minister called us immediately. He wanted to be informed about the past work details in sports. We only informed him orally, but the Prime Minister has directed us to present a report on the work details within 10 days,” says NSC Vice-President Timsina.

“The Prime Minister has directed us to present a detailed report of the developments in the sports sector and the construction works related to the Eighth National Games,” Timsina added.

According to Timsina, the Prime Minister also enquired about conflicts in the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA).

“He asked us about the conflicts in the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA). Member Secretary Bista has written to the current ANFA President Karma Tshering Sherpa in that regard. He said that the necessary investigation will be carried out after getting a reply,” Timsina added.

But Appreciable, says Member Secretary!

Meanwhile, Member Secretary Bista said the meeting was appreciable and shows the Prime Minister’s attention towards the development of the country’s sports sector. He agreed with the Prime Minister’s concerns on the issues.

“It is very encouraging for us that the PM has shown concerns about the upcoming Eighth National Games, the 13th South Asian Games (SAG) to be held in Nepal and the problems in the sports associations,” says Bista.

“He asked about the National Games and the SAG. He also assured us about the budget and told us not to be worried. He told us that no tournament should be stopped in lack of budget,” added Bista.

Hope the sudden review meetings will shed light on the issues concerning the country’s sports activities.

Meetings of this kind are very important for Nepal considering the country’s sports journey in recent times across major sports categories such as Cricket and Football, among others.
