Kathmandu, January 8

Subash Tamang fired a superb six-under 66 in the second round of the CMS Faldo Series Nepal Championship here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

The 16-year-old Tamang posted the 36-hole total of seven-under 146 for nine-stroke lead over Sukra Bahadur Rai going into the third and final round. Rai carded even-par 72 in the second round.

In the boys’ 12-16 age category, Tamang opened up 11 strokes ahead of Sam Doublard, who carded three-under 69 for the total score of four-over 148. Binod Tamang shot second straight four-over 76 to be at the third position with the total score of eight-over 152.

In the boys’ 17-21 age category, the Surya Nepal Eastern Open champion Rai posted two-over
146 total after 36 holes and he was 14 strokes ahead of Bipin Tamang, who played second consecutive eight-over 80. Suman Pariyar was third at 161 after he shot a five-over 77.

In girls’ section, Kashmira Shah moved to the top of the standing with the total score of 32-over 176. Shah shot 15-over 87 in the second round to add to her overnight score of 89. Prativa Rai fell to second with the total score of 34-over 178 after she posted 21-over 93 in the second round. The another participant, Juny Gurung was third at 189. Gurung played 22-over 94 to add to her first day score of 95.

Overall leader Tamang played a brilliant round carding seven birdies and a bogey. He played three-under 33 on either half. He took the turn after carding three birdies on the second, third and fifth holes. On the back nine, Tamang faced a lone bogey on the 15th hole against four birdies on the 10th, 13th, 14th and 18th holes.

National team member Rai shot two-over 38 on the front nine and bounced back with two-under 34 on the latter half. Rai faced bogeys on the second and third holes before carding a birdie on the fifth. But he dropped a shot on the sixth before taking the turn. Rai faced a double bogey on the 11th hole before sinking an eagle on the 12th hole and carded birdies on the 13th, 14th and 18th holes.

A total of 26 golfers are taking part in the 54-hole tournament organised jointly by Nepal Golf Association and Gokarna Forest Resort under the sponsorship of ISME Pvt Ltd. The winners of all three categories will earn berths in the 13th Faldo Series Asia Grand Final to be held at the Laguna Lang Co in Danang, Vietnam, in March.
