Sunsari, January 28

Defending champions Ruslan Three Star Club crashed out of the Madan Bhandari Memorial International Invitational Itahari Gold Cup here today.

In the third quarter-final match of the tournament, departmental outfit Tribhuvan Army Club recorded a 3-1 victory over Three Star in penalty shootout after both the teams played a 1-1 stalemate in regulation period. The Lalitpur based-club had won the title defeating Laxmi Hyundai Manang Marshyangdi Club 1-0 in the previous edition of the tournament.

TAC — who had lost to Three Star in the title clash of the Ruslan Simara Gold Cup on Saturday — confirmed the semi-final berth along with Kakarvitta Football Training Centre and Signature Manang Marshyangdi Club. The last quarter-final match of the tournament will be played between another departmental side Nepal Police Club and CFC Club of Bhutan on Tuesday.

On Monday, skipper Bharat Khawas scored in the 13th minute of the second half for the departmental side. However, the Armymen could not hold on to the lead as Ananta Tamang netted the equaliser in the 71st minute.

TAC goalkeeper Bikesh Kuthu was the hero in tie-breaker as he made two brilliant saves. Bikram Lala was the lone Three Star player to score from the spot after Kuthu blocked shots from Ranjit Dhimal and Buddha Limbu, while Rupesh KC shot wide.

Likewise, TAC skipper  Khawas, Santosh Tamang and Bibek Basnet converted from the spot, while Dip Lama and Padam Tamang shot out. Kuthu was named the man of the match and he received Rs. 10000. A total of eight teams are taking part in the event organised by Rashtriya Jagriti Club. The winners will be richer by Rs 1.6 million.
