RAJBIRAJ: In spite of recent havoc wreaked by strong winds to mango orchards, Saptari district, this season, will yield mangoes worth Rs 1.48 billion this year, District Agriculture Development Office estimates.

According to DADO Spokesperson Dinesh Prasad Yadav, although mangoes have been planted over 7000 hectares in the region, tropical trees have bore flowers and fruit in 5000 hectares. Moreover, it has been estimated that one metric tonne of mangoes will be produced per hectare.

Nonetheless, juicy stone fruit worth Rs 70.360 million were destroyed by strong winds and hailstones in the district, a week ago.

Severe weather phenomena faced by the area past week ravaged mango orchards spread over 500 hectares in Kanchanrup Municipality and 200 hectares in Saptakoshi Municipality, Chief of DADO, Bhagi Rath Yadav informed adding that the drupe fruits are still facing threat from severe weather, mango seed weevil (insect that feeds on mango seeds) and mango leaf-hopper which destroys mango leaves and flowers.

The major orchards fall along the East-West Highway from Kanchanrup to Walan in Sapatri while 11 areas in the region are considered as pocket zone for mango plantation.

Moreover, 9 varieties of mangoes including Malda, Bombay, Amrapali, Kalkatiya, Dashahri among others are produced and consumed in markets of major cities of Kathmandu, Pokhara, Narayangadh, Biratnagar and Dharan.

According to Yadav, the district had witnessed a poor year vis-à-vis mango yield as it only harvested 20000 tonnes of mangoes in 7000 hectares, last year. However, the tropical trees have bore good quantity of flowers this year, Yadav added.

Nadal to face defending champion Zverev in Rome final

ROME: A rampant Rafa Nadal turned on the style to beat his old rival Novak Djokovic 7-6(4) 6-3 on Saturday and reach his first Italian Open final since 2014.

The top-seeded Spaniard will face defending champion Alexander Zverev who overcame fourth seed Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-6(13) 7-5 in the other semi-final.

The 21-year-old German, who won the Madrid Open last week, is the in-form player on the ATP Tour going into the French Open, chalking up his 13th win in a row to reach Sunday’s final.

Nadal’s clash with Djokovic, an open-era record 51st meeting between the two, was a thriller, with former world number one Djokovic producing his best performance since returning from a long-term elbow injury.

“Playing against him is always a big challenge,” Nadal said. “He played well, and it’s always the same against him. When you go down a little bit in level, he’s always there and you are in big trouble.”

Djokovic made the stronger start as Nadal struggled to get his first serves in, the Spaniard coughing up two break points in the opening game which his opponent squandered.

Nadal soon pounced however, breaking Djokovic to go 4-2 up before the Serb rode his forehand to a stunning recovery.

Djokovic, a four-times champion in Rome, was helped by a fortunate touch off the net cord that gave him two break points, and he converted for 5-4 before holding serve to draw level.

Nadal started the tiebreak as he began the match, a poor forehand volley handing Djokovic the initiative, but the Spaniard won the next two points on his opponent’s serve to retake control.

Djokovic clawed back to 3-3 but cracked after an unlucky touch off the tape put Nadal 6-4 up and the Spaniard wrapped up the set in 71 minutes.

Nadal carried his momentum into the second set, winning 10 of 11 points in a blur of vicious swerving forehands and clubbed backhands that brought him an early break and a 2-1 lead in the decider.

Djokovic still showed an appetite to fight back, forcing Nadal to three deuces in the eighth game of the second set before the Spaniard carved out a hold.

That failure ended the Serb’s resistance and Nadal won in style on his opponent’s serve, striking a punishing forehand down the line to seal victory.

Cilic proved a tough opponent for Zverev, going toe-to-toe with the youngster in a tiebreak lasting 20 minutes before the German ground down the wily 29-year-old to take the opener.

Second seed Zverev was still buzzing from going in front and immediately paid a heavy price as Cilic pounced to grab an early break.

But the German displayed nerves of steel, breaking the big-serving Croat to draw level before breaking him again to seal victory in just over two hours.

PARIS: Memphis Depay scored a hat trick as Lyon came from behind to beat Nice 3-2 and qualify for the Champions League at the expense of Marseille in the French league on Saturday.

Lyon, which had a one-point lead over Marseille ahead of the last round, kept its lead intact and finished in third place behind Paris Saint-Germain and deposed champion Monaco. The first three teams in the French league qualified for the Champions League.

“Lots of joy tonight, everybody was very focused and motivated,” said Lyon forward Nabil Fekir, who is widely expected to leave the club this summer. “It caps an exceptional season.”

Alassane Plea scored Nice’s goals.

Depay scored all three goals in the second half.

Nice coach Lucien Favre confirmed he will leave the club in the offseason.

MARSEILLE MISS OUT

After losing the Europa League final to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, Marseille missed out on the Champions League for the second time despite beating Amiens 2-1.

“We had a superb season but our efforts did not pay off,” Marseille top striker Florian Thauvin said.

Marseille ended fourth and will play the Europa League next season alongside Rennes and Bordeaux.

LOPES SCORES TWICE

Monaco won at Troyes 3-0 and finished runner-up, 13 points behind PSG, which drew at Caen 0-0. The goalless draw guaranteed Caen stayed in the topflight while Troyes was demoted to the second division.

Monaco needed just one point to qualify for the Champions League but made sure it finished runner-up with a win. The Principality side was in complete control as Rony Lopes scored twice and Jordi Mboula sealed Troyes’ fate in added time.

Troyes finished 19th and joined last-place Metz in the second division.

Toulouse, which beat Guingamp 2-1, will have to win a playoff against a second-division club to remain in the topflight.

Elsewhere, Italian coach Claudio Ranieri won his last game in charge of mid-table Nantes, 1-0 over Strasbourg.

WEAH FIRST START

In the absence of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe, PSG coach Unai Emery gave Timothy Weah — George Weah’s 18-year-old son — his first start in Caen.

Caen finished the season with only 27 goals, the worst total since Arles-Avignon was demoted with 21 in 2011.

England v Pakistan can be the healthy distraction the ECB so craves

0

English cricket may be in a state of flux (or crisis), but the visits of Pakistan, India and Australia should provide genuine exhilaration on the international stage this summer

Come Thursday there will be that unique hum of excited conversation around the stands at Lord’s. The ground will look a picture, the sun should be shining and when the two decorously blazered captains make their way to the middle for the toss all will seem well with the cricketing world. This may be a veneer of contentment and calm since the game in this country is in a state of flux (say the optimists) or crisis (say the pessimists).

Still, as the umpires make their way through the Long Room there will be a ripple of applause and another international summer of cricket will be under way.

‘I don’t feel like an underdog’: Jürgen Klopp eager for Real redemption

The Liverpool manager still has raw memories of defeat in a Champions League final but he is undeterred as he prepares for another tilt at club football’s ultimate prize

Picture the scene. A sunbed by a hotel swimming pool in Las Vegas in May 2014. A German holidaymaker is trying to relax, to clear his mind of everything involving work, but his repose keeps being disturbed by noises off.

“There was a football match on television and a lot of people were watching it,” Jürgen Klopp says, taking up the story. “It was Real Madrid v Atlético in the Champions League final and everyone was shouting in Spanish. I was kind of annoyed by hearing the noise, because I had been trying to ignore the game. I didn’t want to watch it, I had no clue who had scored or who had won, because it was still painful to think of what had happened the year before.

Juventus mark Buffon’s last match and raise Serie A trophy

TURIN: It was a day of celebration but also of tears as Juventus captain Gianluigi Buffon played his last match for the Bianconeri after 17 years at the club.

Juventus beat already-relegated Hellas Verona 2-1 in the final round of Serie A on Saturday, an hors d’oeuvre to the main course that was bidding an emotional farewell to Buffon and receiving the league trophy for a record-extending seventh successive time.

Buffon, widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers ever, announced on Thursday he was leaving Juventus although the 40-year-old World Cup winner has put off retirement to consider offers to play overseas.

“Today, it was right that Gigi Buffon was honored for all he has done, there was no better way to finish this year,” said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has worked with Buffon since joining the club in 2014.

“I was moved for him. In these four years I have seen him do impressive things and he deserved a goodbye like this. There was a wonderful atmosphere.”

Buffon was last onto the podium after the match to lift the Serie A trophy as fans and teammates alike chanted his name and applauded.

The tributes — and the tears — started even before kickoff.

Buffon ran out for the warmup first as defender Andrea Barzagli held back his teammates for a few seconds to let the ‘keeper enjoy the reception on his own.

The former Italy captain spent several minutes under one of the stands behind the goal and had tears in his eyes as he hugged many fans.

A huge banner of Buffon was unveiled before kickoff, while there were continuous chants and songs about him during the match.

Buffon, who could be seen at times wiping away tears, had hardly a save to make.

His counterpart Nicolas was far busier and saved a late penalty from Stephan Lichtsteiner, who was also playing his farewell match for Juve.

Juventus broke the deadlock four minutes after the interval when a corner was played short and Douglas Costa dribbled into the area. His effort was saved by Nicolas but Daniele Rugani tapped in the rebound.

Miralem Pjanic doubled Juve’s lead three minutes later with a trademark free kick.

Buffon was substituted in the 63rd to an emotional standing ovation. He was hugged by all of his teammates and staff as he struggled to hold back the tears. Buffon was called back by the fans and he spent the final 15 minutes of the match walking around the stadium and being festooned by scarves.

Alessio Cerci scored for Verona in the 76th to end Juve’s bid to set a new Serie A record of 23 clean sheets in a season.

Buffon moved to Juventus in 2001 and made 656 appearances. He won his ninth Serie A title with Juventus this season, leading the Bianconeri to a fourth successive league and cup double.

After leading the team in its celebrations in the stadium, Buffon was also central to the party atmosphere outside Allianz Stadium as Juventus set off on another trophy-laden parade through the streets of Turin on an open bus.

Kovac and Frankfurt stun Bayern 3-1 to win German Cup final

BERLIN: Niko Kovac stunned his future employer by leading Eintracht Frankfurt to a 3-1 win over Bayern Munich in the German Cup final on Saturday.

The Frankfurt coach, who has agreed to take over from the retiring Jupp Heynckes in Munich next season, oversaw a committed performance from his side crowned by two goals from the impressive Ante Rebic.

The Croatian striker scored early and late to cancel out Robert Lewandowski’s equalizer for Bayern.

Bayern might have had a penalty in injury time, but referee Felix Zwayer decided otherwise after consulting video replays, and Mijat Gacinovic then sealed it on a counterattack for Frankfurt.

“It’s unbelievable,” said Frankfurt’s Kevin-Prince Boateng, back in his Berlin hometown. “Everyone said we’d be beaten out of the stadium and we beat Bayern Munich out of the stadium.”

It was Frankfurt’s first title for 30 years, and its fifth German Cup also provided a ticket to the Europa League next season.

“We fought and whoever fights and believes in themselves will be rewarded. I’m so proud,” Boateng said.

Kovac went one better after his side lost to Borussia Dortmund in last year’s German season-ending showpiece.

“This year we have the positive feelings, the nice feelings,” said Kovac, who struggled to hold back his tears.

“I’m sad to be leaving. I know where I’m going, but I’ve experienced two and a half wonderful years and what we delivered here was huge. I’m leaving a team with great character, great guys.”

Heynckes was hoping to sign off with another domestic double, but there was to be no repeat for the 73-year-old coach who revitalized Bayern after coming out of retirement to replace the fired Carlo Ancelotti.

Lewandowski hit the crossbar early on but Rebic took Frankfurt’s first chance minutes later when he forced James Rodriguez to lose the ball and received it back from Boateng before firing inside the post.

Lewandowski equalized minutes into the second half when Joshua Kimmich pulled the ball back for the Poland striker to score with a deflected shot.

Rebic grabbed his second in the 82nd minute after a long punt from Danny da Costa. The Croat headed the ball on despite a defender on either side and clipped it over the outrushing Sven Ulreich.

Frankfurt fans were infuriated when the video referee told Felix Zwayer to check it again as the ball came off Boateng’s hand, but the goal stood.

Zwayer was again the center of attention in a furious finale when Boateng appeared to foul Javi Martinez, but the referee was not feeling generous on his 37th birthday and he declined to award Bayern what looked a clear penalty despite several replay viewings.

“We were lucky,” Kovac acknowledged. “I think it’s a penalty.”

Instead Zwayer gave Bayern a corner, but Gacinovic ran the length of the pitch and scored at the other end.

“For me it’s a clear penalty,” said Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, who clashed with his friend Kovac as emotions took hold.
