MUMBAI– India’s Wriddhiman Saha has been ruled out of this month’s one-off test against Afghanistan with a thumb injury that will need up to six weeks to heal, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Saturday.

The 33-year-old wicketkeeper injured his right thumb while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League playoffs on May 25.

Saha will be replaced by Dinesh Karthik for the match starting June 14 in Bengaluru, when Afghanistan will make their debut in the five-day format after being granted full member status along with Ireland last June.

“He was under observation by the medical staff of the BCCI and the management has decided to give him adequate rest before the start of the England test series,” the BCCI said in a statement.

“Saha’s recovery period is expected to be around five to six weeks.”

India will also be without regular captain Virat Kohli against Afghanistan. The batting mainstay opted to play for the English county championship side Surrey in June but was ruled out after injuring his neck while fielding during the IPL.

Saha has been India’s regular gloveman since the retirement of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni in December 2014. He has played 32 tests and averages above 30 with the bat.

India begin their tour of England in July with three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals before a five-test series starting in August.

KATHMANDU: Nepal has been upgraded to the One Day International (ODI) status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to be effective from Friday.

According to ICC’s press statement, Nepal along with Scotland, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Netherlands have been inducted into the ODI status.

Nepal has been recognised for the first time as the ODI cricketing team after securing a place in the top three of the Associate level during the one day selection series held in Zimbabwe in March.

ICC has stated that Nepal and the Netherlands will be given complete status only after they play four matches each. In the ICC’s one-day ranking, England tops the ladder with 125 points while India is second with 122 points.

In the Associate level, Scotland is ranked 13 with 28 points while UAE comes in the 14th rank with 18 points. The Netherlands has 13 points while Nepal is yet to open an account. Nepal and Netherlands will be playing ODI matches on August 1 and 3.

French Open 2018: Fabio Fognini v Kyle Edmund – live!

0

Kyle Edmund and Fabio Fognini trudge out on to court – they’re first up on Suzanne-Lenglen this morning in a slightly overcast Paris. The Briton’s coach has been talking in the buildup to this one. “For sure we have seen Kyle grow as a person,” Fredrik Rosengren said. “Confidence is one thing, self-esteem is one thing, it’s very important that you enjoy being out there and we have seen him stepping up in big moments. It’s all about sacrifices, hard work, desire and what we talk about being a great tennis player.”

Of facing Fognini, the Swede added: “We know he can beat the best players in the world on a good day but it’s all about the mental strength, being so strong up in the head in the right moments. He [Edmund] has to see himself leaving the court as a winner today.”

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Kyle Edmund did not exactly breeze into the third round – it was a strange match against Marton Fucsovics – but the 16th seed will have to presumably grind through the gears to get the better of clay-court supremo Fabio Fognini, a man who has had twice found joy against Rafa Nadal on his favoured surface. Without being patronising Edmund, it is fair to say, is treading new ground. The 23-year-old has relished his first Grand Slam as the British No 1, and his first as a seeded player. By reaching this point, Edmund has equalled his best performance at this tournament. Going one better would be a real feat. “He is a player who is more difficult for me to beat on hard court than clay,” Fognini said. “He has a good forehand and serve. Before he wasn’t moving so well but now he is much better from a physical point of view.”

Nadal, meanwhile, is in action on a glorious day seven a little later on on Phillipe-Chatrier – that’s once Sharapova and Muguruza are done and dusted. Also in action, No 1 Simona Halep faces Andrea Petkovic, while two giants, Marin Cilic and John Isner, have hopes of reaching the last 16.

England v Pakistan: second Test, day two – live!

0

The covers are on at Headingley, with a bit of mizzle in the air. The weatherman never lies, unless he wants a quiet game of golf.

Morning. This England side haven’t been great at coming from behind, whether in a match or a series, so we shouldn’t underestimate what they achieved yesterday. After one day they are in control of this match, and all things being equal they’ll draw the series at some stage on Monday.

It was a smart, determined and often skilful performance, led by the rejuvenated Stuart Broad. England will resume this morning on 106 for two, a deficit of 68, with Joe Root looking very good on 29 and Dom Bess on 0. The forecast is mixed today but England literally have all the time in the world to cement their winning position.

Raheem Sterling knows he has messed up after England late show | Daniel Taylor

0

Gareth Southgate has let the forward know how serious his transgression was, with Sterling apologising to the squad

This time it is not so easy to defend the guy. It is not a witch-hunt, it is nothing to do with his choice of body art, where he shops or what he eats for breakfast and, if you happen to think Raheem Sterling is treated differently in parts of the media because of the colour of his skin, that does not change the fact he has genuinely messed up.

Private sector bats for BRI financing for investment in hydro, infra

0

Kathmandu, June 1

Underscoring the need for huge investment in the hydropower and infrastructure sectors for the country to achieve its economic growth targets, private sector representatives have floated the idea of tapping into the financial pool of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

Speaking at a programme organised by Management Association of Nepal (MAN), Gyanendra Lal Pradhan, treasurer of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), said that the government should accelerate the process of roping in Chinese investment through BRI.

“The BRI vision is critical to expand trade, investment relations and for broader economic cooperation in South Asia and with other partners of the region,” Pradhan stated.

Pradhan’s comments have come at a time when International Monetary Fund Chief Christina Lagarde had told Chinese policymakers last month that while Belt and Road finance could provide much needed infrastructure, ‘ventures can also lead to a problematic increase in debt, potentially limiting other spending as debt service rises, and creating balance of payments challenges’.

At the programme titled ‘Hydropower for financial sustainability of states from BRI funding’, Pradhan said that China has expressed willingness to extend soft loan of up to $20 billion for the development of transport infrastructure and hydropower. “Since China is offering soft loans to BRI signatory countries at two to three per cent interest, we should consider taking up their offer,” he said.

“More than 65 countries have supported Chinese President Xi Jinping’s initiative to revive the ancient silk route. As Nepal has also joined the initiative, the time has come to propose large-scale projects to uplift Nepali economy,” he added.

BRI could be an opportunity for South Asian countries to increase economic development by bridging the infrastructure gap, according to Shailendra Guragain, president of Independent Power Producers Association – Nepal (IPPAN).

Pradhan expressed hope that agreements related to some mega projects of hydropower and rail connectivity will be signed during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s upcoming China visit.

IMF’s Lagarde had said that in countries where public debt is already high, careful management of financing terms is critical and also warned that ‘with any large-scale spending, there is sometimes the temptation to take advantage of the selection and bidding process’.

Nepal-India technical committee meet in June third week

0

Kathmandu, June 1

A meeting of Nepal-India joint technical team has been scheduled here for the third week of June to discuss the possibilities of opening new air routes between the two countries.

Following the decision made by executive heads of the two countries on May 11 during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Nepal to finalise the technical study of opening new air entry routes via different points, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) had requested Airport Authority of India (AAI) for a technical meeting on this issue.

Though the actual date of the meeting has not been finalised, AAI has said that it is sending its delegation to Nepal in the third week of June, according to Dipak Baral, director of Air Traffic Management at CAAN, who is also the coordinator of Nepal’s technical committee for the meeting.

Baral informed that CAAN will propose AAI to give air entry routes from Nepalgunj and Janakpur at the meeting.

“The meeting will discuss the pros and cons of allowing air routes for Nepal-bound international flights via Nepalgunj and Janakpur on both Nepal and India,” informed Baral.

CAAN will seek both entry and exit facility through the aforementioned proposed air routes.

Presently, the only authorised air entry point to Nepal from the south is through Simara, which is pretty much congested.

The issue regarding opening of the new cross-border air routes has been raised time and again since the last five years. Though Indian Prime Minister Modi had committed to hold discussions on this issue during his previous visit to Nepal in 2014, no substantial progress had been made on this front until recently.

Meanwhile, CAAN officials are optimistic that the technical committee meeting between the two countries will come up with a clear picture on necessity and prospects of opening new air routes, thereby facilitating both the governments to take the necessary decisions.

“The meeting will only outline the feasibility of opening new cross-border air routes and present the report to the respective governments,” said Baral.

Nepal is seeking new air route facility via Nepalgunj and Janakpur with India with the view of connecting the upcoming international airports in Bhairahawa, Pokhara and Nijgadh.

However, Indian authorities had earlier expressed concerns related to opening air route via Nepalgunj, though the Janakpur route is feasible, citing that the Indian army has set up an air defence base camp on the Indian side close to Nepalgunj.

The Simara air entry route has suffered massive air traffic congestions in the recent years, with the increase in air travel as it is the only gateway for international airlines to come Nepal.
