Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson put England on top against Pakistan
• Second Test, day one: Pakistan 174 all out; England 106-2
• Sam Curran takes wicket on Test debut as ball swings all day
The International Cricket Council is contemplating the virtues of getting rid of the toss in Test cricket. Well, there are two captains, Joe Root and Sarfraz Ahmed, who might welcome being spared the agony of deciding what to do every time they win the toss. They are also becoming unwitting advocates of abandoning this idea.
At Lord’s last week Joe Root, despite a surprisingly green tinge to the playing surface, batted and England subsided to 184 all out on the first day. Here Sarfraz did the obvious thing. The pitch was dry and brown; the sun was trying to creep through hazy cloud, a task it rarely fulfilled; Pakistan batted and were bowled out for 174 and that total was bolstered by a late rally led by the irrepressible Shadab Khan. By the close England sat contentedly at 106 for two. Once again losing the toss had proved to be a wonderful bonus.

• Novak Djokovic defeats Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets
Rafael Nadal has a new rival for the affections of the sometimes fickle patrons of Court Philippe Chatrier. Anyone who witnessed the tournament’s main court rise to embrace Alexander Zverev in victory here on Friday – reciprocated at length – will have been easily persuaded the handsome young German has the game and the charisma to hold their hearts for as long as he chooses.
In the absence of Roger Federer – the sport’s darling – Zverev is seeded second, so can meet Nadal only in the final. What a match that would be. On the evidence of his progress in the first three matches – a quick loosener on day one against Ricardas Berankis, a three-and-a-half-hour grind to overcome Dusan Lajovic and his imperfect but thrilling 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over 26th seed Damir Dzumhur in the third round – there is still work to do.

Chelsea’s owner of 15 years, Roman Abramovich, pulled the plug on the £1bn redevelopment of Stamford Bridge on Thursday having grown infuriated by the Home Office delaying the renewal of his investor’s visa, a move born of heightened tensions between Britain and Russia. The oligarch’s decision has been interpreted by some as the first public indication his enthusiasm for the club is on the wane. On the football side, doubts surround the future of Antonio Conte and the identity of his potential successor, while the team’s star player, Eden Hazard, awaits evidence the club shares his ambitions to challenge for the Premier League title. We address the key questions at a club in flux.

Cleveland could not stay united in the same way as their opponents as a thrilling Game 1 reached its climax on Thursday night
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers had every reason to be angry with JR Smith on Thursday night. Their last, best chance at a miraculous upset in Game 1 of the NBA finals disappeared as Smith dribbled what appeared to be victory circles as the final seconds of regulation expired in a tied game. Of course they were furious. Nothing had gone right in the last 48 seconds of a game they should have won.
The series of calamities that included a reversed charge-call against Golden State’s Kevin Durant and George Hill’s missed free throw (the rebound of which, Smith grabbed before his dribble out) were enough to outrage anyone. And James was livid. The photo of him with his arms out, screaming at Smith, may be the lasting image of his time with the Cavaliers.

American happy to reach first weekend in Paris after recovering from a poor start against the Australian Ashleigh Barty
In a sea of filtered magic Serena Williams still shines, even as she struggles a little on court, even as others rage about her seeding, about her catsuit and her chances of winning another title at Roland Garros.
She has dominated the discussions here without trying, which just may irritate Maria Sharapova, who has toiled in her shadow, except maybe on the cover of magazines. For them to meet in the fourth round, though, Williams has to beat Julia Goerges on Saturday and the Russian has to get past the sixth seed, Karolina Pliskova. Years ago, they would have been odds-on to do that. Not this time. This is a transition tournament, more uncertain than when Serena and Maria ruled.
