Monaco monotony: F1 is in trouble when even the drivers are bored | Paul MacInnes

Lewis Hamilton and Prince Albert might well have the wellbeing of the celebrated grand prix at heart but there is a danger that the sport is losing its romance

There’s a rule of thumb around talking down the product, a “doing a Ratner” kind of thing, and by God does it apply to sport. Such is the competitive nature of the business, and of the individuals involved, that saying anything remotely critical about an activity in general or a performance more specifically is about as likely as watching a free-to-air Test match.

So the aftermath of the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday was quite something to behold. “This is probably the most boring race ever,” was Fernando Alonso’s considered opinion. “Extremely boring.” Lewis Hamilton began his remarks more cautiously – “It was a super-unexciting race for everyone” – but when a fan hollered his own opinion that it was the “most boring race ever”, Hamilton put his foot down.

Novak Djokovic stands tall among stuttering pretenders to Nadal crown | Kevin Mitchell

Former world No 1’s latest French Open win suggests he is in comparable shape to Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov

On a day of rapidly swirling weather and fortunes, Novak Djokovic emerged from a second perfunctory win against a qualifier to stay in the conversation about who is good enough to stop Rafael Nadal winning his 11th French Open. He could get to the quarter‑finals; once there, he might even find another gear or two, which was his trademark in his pomp.

Certainly the former champion is in shape comparable to that of younger contenders in Alexander Zverev, who took five sets to defeat the world No 60 Dusan Lajovic, and Grigor Dimitrov, who survived a tempestuous battle over four hours and 19 minutes against the American Jared Donaldson, who was reduced at one point to serving under-arm.

LONDON: England’s limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan has been included in the one-day international (ODI) squad to face Australia and Scotland despite suffering a finger injury, the England and Wales Cricket Board said on Wednesday.

Morgan fractured the ring finger on his right hand while fielding against Somerset in a Royal London One-Day Cup match and will not play for the World XI in Thursday’s charity Twenty20 game against West Indies at Lord’s.

But the 31-year-old is expected to regain full fitness ahead of England’s one-off encounter with Scotland on June 10 before they face Australia three days later.

England have rested wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler for the match in Edinburgh, with Sam Billings drafted in as replacement in the 13-man squad.

Buttler and pace bowler Tom Curran will return to a 14-man squad for the five-match series against Australia starting on June 13, while Billings drops out.

Limited-overs specialist Alex Hales and Adil Rashid have been selected in the two squads alongside all-rounder Moeen Ali, who was dropped from England’s test side during the tour to New Zealand in March.

England, who are number one in the ODI world rankings, beat hosts Australia 4-1 in a five-match series in January.

Squad v Scotland

Off-target Djokovic does enough to reach round three

PARIS: Novak Djokovic’s target practice often failed to hit the bullseye but that did not prevent the Serbian eking out a 7-6(1) 6-4 6-4 second round win over Spanish qualifier Jaume Munar at the French Open on Wednesday.

The Serb started off by serving a fault, ended the opening game with a double fault and fired plenty of wayward shots wide and long as he tried to subdue the 155th-ranked Munar.

Djokovic was so restless that after being broken in the ninth game of the first set, instead of sitting down and taking in some fluids, he simply walked over to the other side of the net and went through the motions of playing some air shots.

While it was obvious his game is still a long way from the form he produced to win four slams on the trot from 2015 to 2016, his surgically repaired elbow got a workout before he set up a third-round clash with Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.
