LONDON: Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has signed a new long-term contract at Anfield, the Premier League club said on Monday.

The 28-year-old England midfielder joined the Merseyside club from Sunderland in 2011 and has made 283 appearances for them, scoring 24 goals.

“It doesn’t seem like too long ago when I signed my first one – it feels like yesterday, really – but a lot has happened since then,” Henderson told the club website.

“I feel it’s been a progressive journey for me throughout my time here and one I’ve enjoyed so much.

“There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be.”

Henderson, who took over the Liverpool captaincy from Steven Gerrard in 2015, made his first league start of the season against Leicester City on Saturday and helped Juergen Klopp’s side win their fourth game in a row.

He has earned 44 England caps and was a regular as Gareth Southgate’s team reached the World Cup semi-finals this year for the first time since 1990.
