Nepali lifters claim two silver medals

Pokhara, December 7

Nepali lifters Asmita Rai and Bishal Singh Bista claimed silver medals in weightlifting competition under the 13th South Asian Games here today.

The home team took the medal tally to 14, including two gold medals. Asmita Rai finished second in the women’s above-87kg weight category, while Bishal Singh Bista claimed silver in men’s 96kg section. Rai lifted 60kg in snatch and 65kg in clean and jerk for the total lift of 125kg. Sri Lankan lifter Timali Haputhena won gold with 180kg, while Pakistan’s Feroj Parbin came third with 115kg.

Likewise, Bista lifted 247kg to win silver behind Bangladesh’s Jairul Islam (262kg). Kinley Gyaltsen won bronze with a total lift of 170kg for Bhutan, who participated in the SA Games for the first time.

Other Nepali lifters, Man Kumari Kumal (87kg), Tara Devi Pun (76kg), Laxmi Ban (81kg) and Sandesh Gurung (102kg) bagged bronze medals in their respective weight categories.


Football 

POKHARA: Maldives won bronze medal in women’s football after they finished third in the four-team table with a 2-1 win over Sri Lanka. Both the teams had failed to open their accounts following their losses against Nepal and India. With the win, Maldives finished third. India topped the table after beating Nepal 1-0 in the last match of the league. Bala Devi netted the solitary goal of the match. Nepal and India had already advanced to the final with wins over Sri Lanka and Maldives. The final is slated for Monday.


Handball 

POKHARA: Nepali women’s team advanced to the first-ever final in handball. Nepal defeated Pakistan 22-21 in the semifinal match. Uma Rai top scored for the home team with 11 goals. Nepal will now face India in Sunday’s final. India hammered Bangladesh 41-13 in another semi-final match. In men’s section, India and Pakistan set the final date. India defeated Sri Lanka 39-32 and Pakstan beat Bangladesh 27-17 in the semi-final matches. The final is slated for Sunday.


Cricket 

POKHARA: Nepal bagged bronze after finishing third in women’s cricket. Nepal hammered Maldives by 10 wickets on Saturday. Batting first, Maldives were bowled out for just eight runs in 11.3 overs before Nepal raced to 9-0 in seven balls. Aima Aishath (one) was the lone Maldives batter to open accounts, while Nepali bowlers conceded seven wides.

Anjali Chand took 4-1 for Nepal, while Sita Rana Magar and skipper Rubina Chhetry Belbashi grabbed two wickets each. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will fight for gold medal on Sunday.
