Exeter lose at home so rarely this ragged defeat to gallant Wasps represented one of the season’s more improbable outcomes. This was Wasps’ first victory in 10 league visits to Devon and there was scarcely a hint of what was about to unfold when they were 12-0 down inside the first half-hour.

With second-placed Saracens also beaten at Bristol, Exeter’s first home league defeat in 14 months does not alter their position as the league leaders but it could just give their play-off rivals some timely encouragement. The top four qualifiers may even include Wasps themselves, this heart-warming result on a distinctly chilly afternoon having hoisted them to fifth place, three points behind Harlequins in fourth.
