Pokhara, February 22

Himalayan Sherpa Club advanced to the quarter-finals of the 17th Aaha Rara Gold Cup Football Tournament at the Pokhara Stadium today.

Tridev Gurung scored the solitary goal of the match as Himalayan Sherpa defeated Dharan Football Club 1-0 in the first round match. After a goalless first half, Gurung broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when he found the back of the nets with a diving header following a cross from Man Bahadur Tamang. Gurung was named the man of the match.

Himalayan Sherpa created the first move in the 10th minute of the match but Kamal Thapa wasted the chance following a corner. Thapa was denied by Dharan goalie Binay Shrestha in 16th minute. Himalayan Sherpa dominated first half but they failed to convert the opportunities.

The Budha Subba Gold Cup finalists Dharan failed to attack Himalayan Sherpa post in the first half and failed to score in the latter half despite coming close on couple of occasions. Tirtha Shrestha wasted a chance from penalty are in the 58th minute, while Fofana Drahima’s powerful shot was saved by Himalayan Sherpa goalkeeper Kishor Giri in the 65th minute.

Himalayan Sherpa team manager Bijendra Pudasaini said the players did not follow the team strategy properly. “The match did not go as per the team plan as the midfielders could not supply the ball properly,” said Pudasaini. “We also wasted scoring opportunities.”

Dharan FC coach Sagar Ghimire said the team missed the services of a couple of players. “Players like Milan Rai and Manoj Rai joined Nepal Police Club and the team looked week and failed to perform as per the expectations,” said Ghimire.

On Saturday, Signature Manang Marshyangdi Club will take on Nepal APF Club in the first quarter-final match. APF had defeated hosts Sahara Club in the opening match on Thursday.
