A fifth successive Test defeat and loss of series in South Africa has exposed an unhealthy regime that needs a drastic reboot

The Eddie Jones era has been nothing if not educational for the Rugby Football Union. The idea was to hire the world’s most experienced coach, shower him in cash and then sit back and watch him reel in the 2019 World Cup. The only thing Jones will be catching between now and Christmas, at this rate, is a flight back to Australia.

Harsh, perhaps, on the guru who steered England to 24 wins in his first 25 matches, but those halcyon days are starting to read like dog-eared fable. England have lost five Tests in succession, are in danger of unravelling as World Cup contenders and, on and off the field, seem to have had the joy and personality sucked out of them.

Joachim Löw accepted his defending champions had been “negligent” and “haphazard” after Germany’s Group F defeat against Mexico in Moscow.

“The next game is vital for us, we have to win it,” Löw said of a team who had lost their opening game at a World Cup for the first time since 1982.

Justin Rose started dismally: a double at 4 and a bogey at 5. But birdie at 6 meant he retained a faint glimmer of hope, and the lights have been turned up a further notch on 12, as he arrows his approach to three feet and tidies up for another birdie. He’s +5 and the 2013 champ will know nothing’s over quite yet. And here’s some illustration of that: Tony Finau rattles in a 40-footer up 11 for his third birdie in four holes! He’s +3. His partner Daniel Berger, who had gone close with his tee shot, sends his six-foot birdie putt to the right and remains at +4. Par meanwhile for Reed on 13.

Xander Schauffele pars the last and signs for a 68. After tying for fifth spot at Erin Hills last year, it looks like he’ll be finishing in the top ten at a US Open again. Not a bad record from two starts in the competition. Meanwhile Russell Knox was in with a 69; he ended the week at +8.

This was not how Brazil had scripted it. The five-times world champions were in control thanks to a trademark Philippe Coutinho screamer and the first step to avenge the trauma from the previous finals looked set to be sure-footed.
