Indecision, spats and flogged players – England crumble under Eddie Jones

0

A fifth successive Test defeat and loss of series in South Africa has exposed an unhealthy regime that needs a drastic reboot

The Eddie Jones era has been nothing if not educational for the Rugby Football Union. The idea was to hire the world’s most experienced coach, shower him in cash and then sit back and watch him reel in the 2019 World Cup. The only thing Jones will be catching between now and Christmas, at this rate, is a flight back to Australia.

Harsh, perhaps, on the guru who steered England to 24 wins in his first 25 matches, but those halcyon days are starting to read like dog-eared fable. England have lost five Tests in succession, are in danger of unravelling as World Cup contenders and, on and off the field, seem to have had the joy and personality sucked out of them.

US Open 2018: leaders on course in final round – live!

0

Justin Rose started dismally: a double at 4 and a bogey at 5. But birdie at 6 meant he retained a faint glimmer of hope, and the lights have been turned up a further notch on 12, as he arrows his approach to three feet and tidies up for another birdie. He’s +5 and the 2013 champ will know nothing’s over quite yet. And here’s some illustration of that: Tony Finau rattles in a 40-footer up 11 for his third birdie in four holes! He’s +3. His partner Daniel Berger, who had gone close with his tee shot, sends his six-foot birdie putt to the right and remains at +4. Par meanwhile for Reed on 13.

Xander Schauffele pars the last and signs for a 68. After tying for fifth spot at Erin Hills last year, it looks like he’ll be finishing in the top ten at a US Open again. Not a bad record from two starts in the competition. Meanwhile Russell Knox was in with a 69; he ended the week at +8.

Switzerland’s Zuber heads controversial equaliser to deny Brazil victory

0

This was not how Brazil had scripted it. The five-times world champions were in control thanks to a trademark Philippe Coutinho screamer and the first step to avenge the trauma from the previous finals looked set to be sure-footed.

Yet one lapse was all it took for Switzerland to crash back into it – Steven Zuber heading the equaliser – and, with a priceless result within their grasp, they were in no mood to relinquish it.

Mexico’s Hirving Lozano stuns world champions Germany for brilliant win

0

Has there been a more wild, bizarrely open start to the defence of a World Cup? Germany ended this 1-0 defeat by Mexico with six attacking players and three defenders on the pitch, with Manuel Neuer wandering about flapping his arms in the Mexico penalty area, while on the touchline Jogi Löw capered and wheeled, ice-white jogging shoes peddling the air in frustration.

The contrast with the start was profound. In the opening 40 minutes Löw’s team had been ambushed here, the world champions run into a state of breathless trauma by a thrillingly vibrant Mexico attack.

Johanna Konta calls umpire ‘absolute joke’ after defeat to Ashleigh Barty

• British No 1 storms off court after Nature Valley Open final
• Line call from chair umpire prompts angry outburst

Johanna Konta, who blew a 4-1 lead in the deciding set, was furious with the chair umpire over a poor line call and stormed off court to cool down before returning to congratulate Ashleigh Barty for winning the Nature Valley Open in Nottingham on Sunday.

“This is an absolute joke. We are out here busting our chops. You are making decisions that affect all our lives,” Konta shouted at the umpire before completing the final, which Barty won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in a tense, see-sawing match that lasted just over two hours. The Australian kept her composure throughout the spat.

Rivera wins Women’s Tour as Dani Rowe pedals through pain to clinch third

• Coryn Rivera wins OVO Energy Women’s Tour by 11sec
• Lotta Lepistö takes final stage win in blanket finish

After Dani Rowe’s horrendous crash close to the finish in Worcester on Saturday the suspense hanging over the grand finale to the OVO Energy Women’s Tour was less whether Team Sunweb and Coryn Rivera would maintain their stranglehold on the lead – which, to their credit, they did – or who would win the stage, which Lotta Lepistö did in a blanket finish that should mark a turning point for the Finnish sprinter in a season marred by illness.

Rather the big doubt was whether Rowe would survive the north Wales hills and hang on to third place overall despite being barely able to lift her left leg over her bike the previous evening.
