MELBOURNE: Australia batsman David Warner will join Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise St Lucia Stars later this year as he continues to work towards a return to international cricket following a ball-tampering scandal.

Warner will make his CPL debut replacing fellow Australian D’Arcy Short, who is no longer available for the tournament after being selected for Australia A’s tour of India in August and September.

“We are excited to bring David to the Saint Lucia Stars. David is arguably one of the greatest batsman of the modern era and a winning player,” the Stars’ general manager Mohammad Khan said in a statement.

“He is going to add a lot of value on the field and in the dressing room as we pursue our first Hero CPL title.”

Following his 12-month ban by Cricket Australia for the ball-tampering incident against South Africa in March, Warner has signed on for multiple Twenty20 tournaments and is also set to play grade cricket in Sydney.

Warner and former Australia captain Steve Smith, who was also banned for 12 months after the scandal, will also feature in the inaugural Global T20 Canada league, which begins on June 28.

Australia batsman Cameron Bancroft, who was banned for nine months, will join Warner for a limited-overs tournament in Northern Territory in July.

This year’s CPL will be held from Aug. 8 to Sep. 16.

World Cup: Serbia secure narrow win over Costa Rica

KATHMANDU: Serbia’s captain Aleksandar Kolarov scored a sensational goal courtesy of free-kick to give his team a morale-boosting 1-0 triumph over Costa Rica at the Samara Arena today.

Serbia missed a host of chances before skipper Kolarov strode up to struck a decisive free-kick which curled over the bar and beyond outstretched gloves of Keylar Nevas.

Striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was the culprit of missing gilt edge chances to put the game to bed before being withdrawn on the dying minutes of the game to kill some valuable seconds.

In the closing stage, Costa Rica poured men forward in search of an equaliser but the Serbian rearguard stood firm to gain a valuable win.

Serbia, Costa Rica, Brazil and Switzerland are pitted in Group E. The runner-up of this group would potentially face Germany if they top their group F in the next round of 16.

Later today, World Champions Germany will take on Mexico at 8:45 pm kick-off. In late kick-off today, five-time world champions Brazil will lock horns against Switzerland at 11:45 pm.

Mexico fans to modify chants to avoid sanctions

MOSCOW: Mexico fans are agreeing among themselves not to chant what is considered a homophobic slur at the World Cup in Russia to avoid FIFA sanctions.

Instead of the chant, Mexicans plan to sing songs related to a couple of recent scandals in their country at Sunday’s Group F match against Germany.

Mexico’s Football Federation has been fined previously for the chant that fans shout out in unison every time the opposing goalkeeper kicks the ball. Despite campaigns to try to stop it, the chant has continued in the Estadio Azteca in Mexico when the national team plays there.

At last year’s Confederations Cup in Russia amid FIFA threats to suspend a match, El Tri fans practically stopped chanting in the Russian stadium. For the World Cup, fans don’t plan to keep quiet like last year, but instead modify the chants.

SAMARA: Costa Rica and Serbia were drawing 0-0 at halftime in the opening World Cup Group E match in the Samara Arena on Sunday.

Giancarlo Gonzalez squandered Costa Rica’s best chance, heading wide when unmarked in the 12th minute. Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic also wasted a good opportunity in the 28th minute, but he was ruled offside anyway.

World Cup 2018: Germany v Mexico – live!

0

8 min: Mexico pour forward and Vela storms through the middle, Germany’s central midfielders nowhere to be seen. Lozano’s clear on the left again but Vela can’t pick him out. He can win a free-kick, though, Hummels bringing him down 25 yards from goal. This is a chance. Miguel Layun fancies it.

7 min: Draxler glides inside from the left and coaxes a past through to Muller, who wins a corner. Germany take it short and Draxler almost combines with Muller again. Mexico think that Draxler’s offside but play continues. The ball runs to Hummels, who shoots straight at Ochoa from 18 yards.

US Open 2018: final round – live!

0

Well, Moving Day sure escalated quickly. The US Open, folks! There’s not another tournament like it!

But how about that Phil Mickelson shot? No, not his hockey-puck slap on the 13th. The one on 18, off the back of a green everyone else had been tentatively nudging their ball down, lest it slide ten feet past the hole and they three-putt. He opened up his lob wedge, took a full-blooded swing, sent his ball a thousand miles into the air, and landed it softly by the flag. The ostentatious, showboating shot of a singular man who had nothing left to lose, had already made his grand statement, and fancied making another. If ever there was a middle finger to the USGA, it was surely that.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s stunning free kick steers Serbia to win over Costa Rica

0

When Aleksandar Kolarov put the ball down 11 minutes into the second half of a game that never quite caught light, the adage that for some players a free-kick can be as good as a penalty flickered into the mind.

It can seem a fairly lazy thought but in Kolarov’s case it may as well be true: the 32-year-old remains one of the best dead-ball takers around and it was his marvellous goal, swung in from 25 yards, that secured Serbia a victory they ultimately deserved.

Son Heung-min hoping for World Cup miracle to avoid military service | John Duerden

South Korea forward will earn an exemption if team do the seemingly impossible – otherwise all may rest on Asian Games

South Korea begin their World Cup campaign against Sweden on Monday but, remarkably, it may not be the most important tournament for Son Heung-min this summer.

The Tottenham forward is running out of time to earn an exemption from 21 months of military service and the best opportunity to skip that obstacle comes at the Asian Games in Indonesia in August and September.

Royal Ascot 2018: Ken Condon seeks coup in St James’s Palace Stakes

• Irish trainer’s Romanised challenges the top stables on first day
• Condon fears Frankie Dettori’s mount Without Parole

If one were to imagine a sporting version of a socialist paradise, it would not look much like Royal Ascot and there is no surprise each year when the major races at the Queen’s track are won by enormously wealthy owners, working with big-name trainers. But Tuesday’s St James’s Palace Stakes really might redistribute a chunk of prize money from those who have to those who need and Ken Condon, a much-liked but low-profile trainer, is hoping to be among those to benefit.

Only those who follow racing quite closely are likely to be familiar with Condon’s work. His is not one of those behemoth operations which start each year with more than 200 horses and end up with some good ones by sheer weight of numbers. Only 30 heads poke out into his yard at Ridge Manor Stables and there is no room for more.
