Brad Shields on the bench for England Test match against South Africa

• Uncapped Kiwi fast-tracked after handful of training sessions
• Mike Brown named on wing as Jones makes surprise calls

England have fast-tracked the New Zealand-reared Brad Shields straight into their matchday squad for the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg on Saturday. The 27-year-old Hurricanes captain, who is qualified though his English parents, has been named on the bench after only a handful of training sessions with his new team-mates.

Only last Friday the uncapped Shields was playing Super Rugby against the Highlanders in Dunedin and, having grown up in Wellington, has yet to play rugby in England. Normally a back-row forward, he has been invited to provide second-row cover after Joe Launchbury, as expected, failed to recover in time from a calf problem.

Premier League big six win battle for larger share of overseas TV rights

0
• Some money paid according to league position from 2019-20
• Compromise voted in at Premier League meeting on Thursday

The so-called “big six” Premier League clubs have won their persistent battle to be paid a greater share of the league’s burgeoning international TV rights, which have for 26 years been shared equally between all the league’s clubs.

Led by Manchester City and Liverpool, supported by Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, the six clubs have pressed the case that as they are the prime attractions for global audiences and money paid by international broadcasters, they should receive more of the money.

Paulo Futre picks his all-time Portugal XI

The former Portugal legend selects an incredibly strong side with a decent front pairing of Eusébio and Ronaldo

I’m going to stick with the team of the century chosen by the Portuguese people in 2015 in a poll created by the national football association.

I played with Manuel Bento and Vítor Damas in the national team, and now we have Rui Patrício, a European champion, but my keeper is Vítor Baía. I saw him when he first started to train with Porto’s squad, and I later played with him in the national team. He was good at every aspect: one to one, high balls or playing the game with his feet. He conveyed enormous serenity.

F1 rules give Daniel Ricciardo no chance in Canada despite Monaco victory

Sport made to look stupid as Australian with two victories this season may be demoted to the back of the grid in Montreal

The unadulterated delight Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo displayed after winning in Monaco was entirely understandable. After finally claiming the Monte Carlo victory he so desperately wanted, riding a wave of ecstatic emotion was wholly deserved. This week at the Canadian Grand Prix, however, the Australian will be brought back to earth with a painful reminder of the realities of Formula One. He will doubtless still be grinning but likely through gritted teeth in Montreal.

Ricciardo’s joy in Monaco came in the redemption he had sought after a pit‑stop error by the team cost him a win in 2016. He also did it against the odds. When his MGU-K gave out he was leading but spent the remaining 65% of the race 161bhp down on the pursuing Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton. The race was no thriller but Ricciardo’s achievement in managing a partly crippled car and this most demanding of tracks with flawless precision could only be admired.

NBA finals: Warriors close on title as Kevin Durant heroics beat Cavaliers

  • Golden State star scores 43 points in 110-102 Game 3 victory
  • Warriors now lead Cavaliers 3-0 in best-of-seven series

LeBron James has pulled his Cleveland Cavaliers to an improbable NBA finals. But by early Thursday morning as he quietly walked out of his home arena in a purple warmup jacket, it was clear he probably won’t be able to drag the Cavs to one last title before becoming a free agent at season’s end.

The Golden State Warriors are too much for him and for his Cavaliers. In Wednesday night’s Game 3, finished just an hour before, James scored 33 points (in logging a 10th career NBA finals triple-double), limited Warriors star Steph Curry to just one three-point shot and still Cleveland lost, 110-102. Now, down three games to none in the championship round, his dream of winning more than one ring with the Cavaliers is all but over. Friday’s Game 4 could be his last with his hometown franchise.

Stanley Cup Final 2018: Capitals carrying hopes of championship-starved Washington, D.C.

The Capitals have put their fans through agony, but that’s no different than the fans of every other D.C. team since the 1991 Super Bowl. Now the Caps are a win away from ending the drought.

TIA’s extended operation yet to show results

0

Kathmandu, June 6

Seems like it could take months before the government’s aim of easing traffic congestion by extending the operation hours at the sole international airport of the country — Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) — can be realised, as airline companies normally prepare their flight schedule every six months.

“Currently the airline companies are operating their flights as per their earlier schedule, which means there are no scheduled flights in the three-hour extended slot,” said Raj Kumar Chhetri, general manager of TIA.

On May 21, the TIA started to operate for 21 hours a day. Earlier, the airport used to operate for 18 hours a day, that is, from 6:00am to midnight. Now, with the three-hour extension, TIA remains open for business between 6:00 am and 3:00 am the next day.

One TIA official, seeking anonymity, said that the decision to operate the international airport for 21 hours daily seems to have been rushed and not really thought through. “While launching the extended hours, Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Rabindra Adhikari and other government officials had given the impression that the congestion at TIA would be a thing of the past from the very next day. More than two weeks down the line, the traffic situation has pretty much remained the same, while the staffers have nothing to do between midnight and 3:00am.”

But going by the information provided by Chhetri, the situation could change.

“Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), Jet Airways and Qatar Airways have hinted at rescheduling their regular flights in the extended three hours after some time,” he stated, adding that NAC had successfully landed one international flight around 1:00am on Tuesday. The flight was, however, not scheduled to arrive in the extended hours and had been delayed.

Bindita Singh, media and marketing head of Qatar Airways Nepal office, affirmed that the airline is mulling over rescheduling its late-night flights in the time slot between midnight and 3:00am considering the traffic congestion at the TIA starting late afternoon. “However, nothing has been fixed yet.”

NAC officials also confirmed the plans of the national flag carrier to operate its fleet in extended hours. “We will most probably initiate regular flights in extended hours after four months,” said Rabindra Shrestha, NAC spokesperson.

According to Shrestha, operating international flights in the extended time at the TIA is not a big deal. “But at the same time, getting a slot (for landing, takeoff and parking) in the foreign destination out of the regular schedule is very difficult, especially because all international airports normally revise their flight schedules only every six months.”

Altogether, 30 international carriers and 20 domestic airlines (including helicopter companies) operate regular flights to and from TIA.

The airport sees approximately 400 take-offs and landings a day — both domestic and international. TIA has the capacity of handling 1,500 passengers at once, but is forced to deal with around 2,500 passengers during peak hours at present.

NAC in third position

0

KATHMANDU: Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) — the national flag carrier — is in the third position in terms of carrying passengers from Nepal to various destinations and vice versa via air route.

According to a three-month data maintained by Tribhuvan International Airport, Nepal Airlines carried 89,214 passengers in and out of Nepal between January and March.

The report shows that Jet Airways topped the chart, with 127,823 air passengers.

Similarly Qatar Airways stood second with 105,698 passengers.

As per TIA, nearly 1.1 million air travellers used the country’s only international airport in the review period.
