Eddie Jones promised his side would smash Japan, but it was more of a smash and grab as England, outplayed for the opening 50 minutes, eventually overpowered resourceful and cunning opponents who ran out of energy in the final quarter.

Kicking penalties from inside their own half, bringing on a co-captain at half-time and going for goal past the hour-mark was not what the England head coach had in mind when he said his players would be so ruthless that their opponents needed to seek refuge in a temple.
