Shahi, Thapa among strong contenders

Kathmandu, May 17

Surya Nepal Premier Golf Championship, the biggest and final event of the season, is beginning at the Gokarna Golf Club on Saturday.

It carries the highest cash purse of Rs 1.2 million and golfers are eagerly waiting for the tournament which is an important for golfers as it affects the Order of Merit.

The golfers have already started their preparations for the biggest event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2017-18. No 1 pro Shivaram Shrestha and second ranked Bhuwan Nagarkoti are in the race to finish first in Order of Merit.

It will not be easy for both of them as the field has been strengthened by the arrival of Nepali professional golfers, who have been honing their skills abroad.

Toran Bikram Shahi is one of them. Shahi has been plying his trades in the Indian golf since 1998 and is a regular pro in the Professional Golf Tour of India since 2007. Shahi, currently affiliated to Classic Golf and Country Club in Delhi, has been giving private lessons to professional golfers and his students in India.

Toran had won Kailash Team Open in 2007, a year before the Surya Nepal Golf Tour began. He won Surya Nepal NPGA Tour Championship in 2014 for his second career title.

In India, Toran has played a total of 143 events of PGTI since 2007. Another contender, Dhana Bahadur Thapa will be eyeing a good finish to finish third in Order of Merit.
