Wigan strengthened their claim for a place in Super League’s play-offs at the expense of Warrington, whose own top-four hopes were dealt a blow after Liam Farrell’s late try inflicted a third consecutive defeat in all competitions on the Wolves.

With both sides eliminated from the Challenge Cup at the semi-final stage last weekend, this was an ideal opportunity for someone to bounce back and showcase their title credentials with the Grand Final originally scheduled to be held at Old Trafford on Saturday. For large periods, it looked as though Warrington would be the side to do that; they led for more than an hour here before Farrell’s match-winning try four minutes from time.
