Ghale, Alam claim gold medals in taekwondo

Lalitpur, September 13

Rubina Ghale and Mohammad Alam of Nepal won individual poomsae gold medals on the inaugural day of the third Tensberg Kathmandu International Taekwondo Championship at the Nepal Taekwondo Academy today.

Ghale defeated India’s Smriti Thapa in the women’s U-29 age group final, while Sushmita Thapa and Asha Balmiki of Nepal finished joint third. Alam bagged the men’s section gold after he beat Bangladesh’s Kamroon Islam, whereas India’s Sarnik Dhara and Nepal’s Vivek Rai came third.

Likewise, Nepal’s Subina Shrestha and Prajwal Karmacharya won U-19 section gold medals, while Malaysian player Egnes Xi Jing bagged gold in girls’ U-17 age group. Also, Malaysia’s Kevin Khan and Sirel Xi Jing bagged U-15 section gold medals. Malaysia also dominated the U-12 section with Noor Urdina and Anubat Sarat winning gold medals.

In Kyorugi, Pooja Kunwar and Swastika Maharjan won gold medals for the home team.  Kunwar defeated Legden Tamang in girls’ cadet U-46kg final, while Simran Magar and Himkala Jirel came joint third. Likewise, Maharjan beat her teammate Roselin Ojha in the U-37kg final. Diya Rajak and Ankita Rana Magar finished joint third. Also, Nepal’s Rina Lama beat Sumina Khagdi in the U-44kg final, while Rubina Shrestha and Sujita Tamang were joint third.

In all, 865 players from 14 countries — including 650 from Nepal — are taking part in the three-day tournament organised by United Taekwondo Dojang under the sponsorship of Tigers Brewery Pvt Ltd. The tournament offers a total of 114 gold medals. President of Tigers Brewery Tejendra Khadka inaugurated the championship.
