Jurgen Klopp says he does not want to know how long Virgil van Dijk will be absent. The Dutchman faces a lengthy layoff after suffering knee ligament damage in the Merseyside derby last week and is awaiting an operation on the injury.

“We don’t even want to know it, to be honest. It will take time, that’s clear,” said Klopp. “In the end, it’s really like this: all people are different and so we should not limit that by saying ‘for him it was that long, for him it was that long’.

Nuno Espirito Santo anticipates that standards will rise as the season goes on after some questionable defending in the opening stages of the Premier League campaign. Wolves face Newcastle on Sunday, having won three of their opening five games in a season which has only see one goalless draw.

“Every team is improving and needs time,” Nuno said. “As the competition goes by it will be a lot harder because the standards will grow. It’s too early to predict what is going to happen, we go game-by-game which is always our approach but it’s too early to predict what is going to happen.
